Do you know how to apply eyeshadow to make your eye pop? I am not just telling you about applying shade on your eye lids and calling it a day. I must disclose I am guilty of this from time to time. When you’re getting ready for work at 6:00 a.m. do you actually have the time to go “makeup artist” on yourself? Most likely not…but at times you like to really make up your eyes, whether it be for a get together, special event, or date. We can get a tiny bit stale in our makeup application at times. For a lot of years, I usually followed the same exact approach for my eyes: apply a light colored shadow on the whole lid. Then use a darker hue in the crease. Finished. It’s really straightforward, but I wanted something a little more breathtaking and unique. I not too long ago went to my beauty salon, Capella Salon to get my hair done and had the chance to sit and converse with makeup artist, Carly Jacuzzo. She gave me some fantastic suggestions on how to apply eyeshadow like an expert and a few more tips I am going to pass on to you in this posting.
For starters, when using makeup ensure it is a non toxic brand, free of parabens, talc, mineral oil, and other harmful chemicals. Capello is now offering a great line of mineral makeup called La Bella Donna. Doesn’t that name sound high-class? The products are just as high-class as the name infers. While my hair was processing Carly applied my makeup as if my face was a blank canvas and she was the “artiste”! I really enjoy the technique she used on my eyes and now I will let you in on it (it’s quite simple really):
1. Utilize a light colored shade to the total lid up to the eyebrow line. She used a glossy light brown color.
2. Apply a color in a tad of a darker shade than the one you previously used in the middle portion of the eye. Make sure to blend using a top quality makeup brush.
3. Choose a dark hue for this step. Carly used a lovely dark brown. From the center of your eyelid crease to the corner of your eye and down toward the eyelash line, sweep the brush in a v formation. This seriously makes the eyes jump out! Blend in, naturally. Simply speaking, you’re putting on colors from light to dark as you go from the inner eye to the outer.
4. As a last step, you can line the eyes either with eyeliner pencil, or as Carly did, with an even darker shade of mineral shadow. She used a dark grey, (almost black) to line the top and a little bit of the bottom part of my lash line.
So right now you can apply your eye shadow just like an expert! She also provided some additional suggestions which I’ve been using ever since and I know you’ll like.
Bonus tip #1- To apply color, you can use the exact same “v” strategy used for the eyes. Apply blush in a V shape from the top of your cheeks to the inner part of the face to the lower part of the cheek.
Bonus tip #2- When doing your makeup, apply a bit of tape (just plain scotch tape) to the edge of your brow line to the lower part of your eye lid for perfect eye makeup!
Bonus tip #3- Be sure to do your eye makeup first, then do your face, that way any errors can be conveniently cleaned up without ruining your face makeup.
Bonus tip #4- This one was an answer to a question sent by one of my readers. She asked, “What do you do when a spot appears right when you have an evening out or important party?” Carly said a lot of people do the wrong thing which makes the zit get noticed even more and we definately don’t want that! As an alternative to applying concealer then powder, do this in its place: apply foundation to begin with! Then apply concealer and powder. A lot of girls do the concealer first, but it eventually ends up placing emphasis on the mark. Do it in reverse to cover that nasty pimple!
Bonus tip #5- This one isn’t from the makeup artist…it’s from me and pertains to how to store makeup rather than application. Actually, it’s from my aunt…when I was calling on her, I observed how she stored her makeup and I loved the idea. She got one of those mini 3 drawer storage containers and all her make up were so in order! She inspired me so much that I went and purchased one last week (on sale!) at Target. It’s a lot better than throwing every thing in a bag, not being able to find anything, and having it all coated with eye makeup. If you have a big cosmetic collection, you can get the more substantial storage bins.
Often times I have wished I had access to a makeup artist to ask her all the burning questions I have about makeup application. I felt so grateful to be able to speak with Carly during my hair appointment. She did a lovely job on my cosmetics when I was there, but she made me fully grasp that if I used her ideas, I can do it myself too. If you use her relatively easy techniques, you can apply makeup with ease. Just after my makeup and hair was finalized, I adored how the foundation looked so much that I ended up purchasing it. I don’t generally use a great deal of foundation, but this one gave me a sleek, yet natural look. It was La Bella Donna compressed minerals in Marianna and believe it or not, it looked as bright later as it did when Carly put it on me. If you’re searching for a hair stylist (that’s Debbie Caruso, owner of Capello) or a proficient makeup artist, please stop by Capello Salon. Oh, yes, and tell them Robin sent you!
